(Click on any thumbnail above to see a full size photo) Newfoundland was officially discovered by John Cabot in 1497 and declared to be a colony of England by Sir Humphery Gilbert in 1524. She was her own politically independent entity until joining of the Canadian Confederation in 1949. According to "The Newfoundland Act of 1949", section 33, which was the central document in her union with Canada, Newfoundland's postage was to be accepted for use on Canadian mail. As a result there are many wonderful examples of envelopes with a mixture of both Canadian and Newfouldland postage. The cover above carries sufficient postage for surface delivery to the United States (5 cents) with the added registration fee (20 Cents). - - - Thanks to David Oldfield Return to Home Page |
